Hydrogen Searches for Demand, Materials Search for a Market – This Week in Green Technology
This week in the sustainability industry reveals transformation moving at two different speeds: Poland's hydrogen sector is still waiting for customers despite billions in investment, while the global market for smart materials races ahead without a shadow of doubt. We take a look at what these two trends mean for companies planning their strategy for the coming years, and what they could bring to the conversation at trade fairs.
01 · Hydrogen
Green Hydrogen in Poland: Investment Is There, Demand Still Isn't [1]
Orlen isn't slowing down – the company already operates two facilities producing automotive-grade hydrogen and is building a 5 MW electrolyzer hub in Szczecin. The goal is ambitious: 90,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year by 2035. Tauron is also entering the game, developing its own hydrogen projects in Jaworzno and Stalowa Wola, building a second pillar of the country's hydrogen infrastructure alongside Orlen.
The problem is that infrastructure alone isn't enough. Grupa Azoty and other market players remain visibly cautious, for several reasons: the high cost of producing green hydrogen compared with conventional fuels, still-weak demand from heavy industry and transport, and an uncertain regulatory environment that makes long-term investment planning difficult. Paradoxically, Poland is already the third-largest hydrogen producer in the entire European Union – except that this output is dominated by grey hydrogen, made from fossil fuels, rather than its green counterpart.
This shows that hydrogen as a technology is no longer the main barrier – the real barrier today is economics and an actual market for the product. For companies in the green technology and renewable energy sector, this is a clear signal that it's worth investing not just in production capacity, but in building the entire demand chain: road and rail transport, energy-intensive industry, and energy storage.
02 · Eco-Materials
Smart Materials: A Market Set to Triple in Size [2]
While Polish hydrogen is still waiting for demand, the global smart materials market clearly knows no such problem. The latest market report values it at USD 22.3 billion in 2025, with growth projected to reach as much as USD 50.7 billion by 2032 – a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.5%, a pace many industries today can only dream of.
Driving this growth are bio-based materials, self-healing materials, and those integrated with IoT sensors and artificial intelligence algorithms. They're finding applications not only in aerospace and automotive, but also in construction and healthcare – precisely the areas most closely tied to the idea of sustainable development: less waste, longer product lifespans, and smarter resource management.
These numbers are good news for exhibitors in the eco-materials and green building sector – they show that investors and industry alike treat this segment not as a niche curiosity, but as one of the major directions of technological development for the coming decade.
Summary
Summary
This week revealed two faces of the green transformation: Poland's hydrogen sector, building infrastructure faster than the market is ready to use it, and the global market for the materials of the future, growing regardless of local regulatory and investment barriers. Both topics – hydrogen and smart materials – will be among the key threads of discussion at Poland Sustainability Expo 2026 – Targi Technologii i Rozwiązań dla Zrównoważonego Rozwoju. Stay tuned for the next installments of our industry roundup, and see you at the expo!
